From Solar products to electric powered vehicles there are so many ways to generate power naturally. We have seen the largest wind farm and Solar Panel powered businesses and now we have the world’s first wave farm that just went live in Portugal. This farm currently has three wave energy converters which are semi submerged snake like devices. The current farm can generate 2.25 MW of energy and the final farm will add an additional 25 machines which will raise that number to 21 MW. With 21 MW you can power up to 15,000 homes. Each unit measures 140 meters long and 3.5 meters in diameter so they do take up a lot of space but they also produce a lot of energy. Just to give you an idea how much here’s an example: The worlds waves can generate up to 2TW of energy and the US currently has a generating capacity of about 1TW.
Now just like wind and solar energy the power generated will not always be the same and cannot always be used on demand but either way once the energy is stored and distributed it helps the environment a lot. If you want to see these giants at work you can check out the video and some more pictures below or you can visit PelamisWave for some extra details on this and future projects.
