Solar Powered Submarine by BKW

Posted Nov 27th 2008  By Gabriel Harding

The Solar industry is taking leaps forward in technology. From solar powered lawn mowers to concepts of ships with solar sails people are thinking up all kinds of uses for Solar Panels. Here we present to you the concept of a Solar Powered Submarine. The Swiss company, BKW, has their eyes set on completing a design that will allow their submarines to harness solar energy.

Now they will not have Solar Panels on the submarine itself (which is what I thought at first) but they will have huge batteries that when docked will charge with the energy gathered from the solar panels at the docking station. It will feature 30kW solar panels and will be capable of carrying 20-30 passengers and two crew members, at a depth of up to 300 meters across Lake Thun in the Swiss Alps. This project is called Project Goldfish and is expected to be up and running by 2012. via gp
