At first glance at this picture you may say to yourself that this looks to be unreal as I thought myself but it is a real building and the view is probably one of the best that you could possibly wish for. The Monte Rosa Alpine Hut is located right outside of Zermatt in the Swiss Alps and the greatest part about it, besides the view, is that this hut is 90% energy self-sufficient. Most of the energy used comes from photovoltaic panels and solar energy thermal systems.
This building is located 2,810 meters above sea level and is used by hikers and skiers that are going on expeditions. The Hut is 4 stories high and can accommodate up to 125 guests. This is definitely a very nice place to spend some time up in the mountains whether you like to ski, snowboard, hike or just enjoy the mountain view.
This is a great example towards cleaner and more efficient structures that we will start seeing more and more solar buildings very soon. Designed by students and professionals at the ETH the Solar Powered Monte Rosa Alpine Hut is a nice step forward to the usage of solar panels and greener cleaner energy. Below you can find a couple more detailed shots of the Hut from the inside as well as a picture of the old hut.
