Many people all over the world use their bicycles to get them from point A to B. Well for all those people who also have cell phones which are constantly dying here is a pretty cool invention that generates kinetic energy which in turn charges your cell phone. You simply clip the piece onto the bike reflector and voila you have a cell phone charger. This model takes about 90 minutes to fully charge and will produce energy as long as you keep on riding your bike. This was designed by Oscar L’Hermitte who is a design student at Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Deign in London.

It looks like a pretty standard bicycle generator (dynamo), which does NOT simply clip to a reflector. It’s mounted in the photo to the front fork with a permanent clamp. There will be some wear to the tire sidewall, just like there is for a dynamo which powers a bicycle light. I used one of those for many years, going back at least to 1970. What’s needed for charging a cell phone or other device is a little circuitry to regulate the voltage. Using your bike dynamo to charge your phone while commuting to work is still a decent idea.

Oh ok, I was judging simply by looking at the picture and I always bought the battery clip on lights for my bike in the past. How significant is the wear done to the bike tire?
