As many of us know restaurants always serve huge portions that can feed anywhere from 2-4 people at times. Well a restaurant in New York City called Hayashi Ya is now charging a 3% surcharge for customers who do not finish their plates. In a recent study it was estimated that Americans typically waste about 27% of the food they purchase every year which I think is a pretty big amount.
Now as far as restaurants charging for food not eaten I feel like that’s just a way for them to pick more money out of their customers. If they where really concerned about food being wasted they would simply reduce the portions that they serve because I have been to some restaurants that I haven’t even been close to finishing the plate.
