Nature Consumes Lighthouse

Posted Dec 19th 2008  By Gabriel Harding

Every so often we run across an abandoned building which is completely consumed by the nature around it. Sometimes you can see an entire house covered with moss and plants slowly growing out of the floor boards. Well this time its a lighthouse that gets consumed but not by the usual greenery but by sand. This is the Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse and it sits about 60 meters above sea level on the sand dunes.

This lighthouse was built in the 19th century and less then 70 years later it is almost completely engulfed by the sands that surrounded it. The sands off the Jutland Coast are very unpredictable and advance and retreat quite quickly so every time people visit the lighthouse is either more or less engulfed in the sands. Researchers say that in about 15-20 years the lighthouse will be lost at see. It’s crazy how nature works.

If you want to take a look at this on google earth you can find it here: latitude 57 deg 26.96 min N and longitude 9 deg 46.51 min E.
