Yesterday we talked about how California was suing Bush for a law that he wanted to pass that would make it so builders would not need to go through animal rights in order to cut down and build in certain areas. Well in an attempt to show the U.S. that he is not all that bad he has declared that 200,000 square miles of different areas in the Pacific will be declared Marine National Monuments. This means that in these areas drilling or other extraction procedures will not be allowed.

In the included area that he is protecting are many beautiful coral reefs, rare species and underwater mud volcano’s. This is definitely a good way to end your final term but did he do it because he actually cares or just to leave on a good note? Check out what Joshua Reichert from the Pew Environment Group had to say:

“This historic action by President Bush protects some of the world’s most unique and biologically significant ocean habitat. Together with the Hawaii marine monument established two years ago, this marks the end of an era in which humans have increasingly understood the need to conserve vanishing wild places on land but failed to comprehend the similar plight of our oceans. It comes none too soon.”
