In an effort to protect the Amazon rain forest Brazil has set up plans to double the number of troops which work along the borders of the Amazon. Defence Minister Nelson Jobim stated that the government will increase the number of troops from 17,000 to 30,000 and are also going to build 28 new forts on Indian land and conservation areas. They have not given a date when they will start this but it is said that it will be a nine year plan that will require a 500million dollar investment.

Now Brazil is not only doing this to save the Amazon Rain forest but also to put itself in a better position military wise. By setting up all these troops and forts they increase their military and help modernize and equip the armed forces. They also want to be independent and not have to rely on other countries to supply them with the necessary materials and weapons.
